In 1784, Larocque joined the XY Company as a clerk, working in the region of the Assiniboine River from 1802 to 1804. In the autumn of 1804 he left Fort Assiniboine, with Charles Mackenzie, Jean-Baptiste Lafrance, and four other voyagers, to go to the Mandan villages on the banks of the Missouri.
